fight your evil situationship boxing rave

a lesson on healthy conflict & communication

Overview

we turned a boxing gym into a rave, with a dj spinning at the center and situationships settling their scores in the ring while the commentators gave live reactions. the concept? turn emotional avoidance into play and prove that confrontation can be healthy, and even healing.

over the course of six fights, a gay and lesbian polycule, gay wrestlers, straight men, and a girl facing off against her evil communist boyfriend all took the ring.

the night built to a final match between gael and kayla, the hosts of grownkid, who closed the event with a reminder that communication will always hit harder than ghosting. as the gloves came off, the crowd kept moving and our djs turned the ring into a dance floor all night.

in one of our favorite movies, scott pilgrim vs. the world, the story follows the protagonist, scott pilgrim, as he battles his love interest ramona flowers’ evil exes, which he must defeat in order to date her. a few days after a recent rewatch, we felt inspired to recreate the concept of battling your evil exes — something we’ve always been intrigued by, because sometimes words are truly not enough.

we also felt this would help us address one of the biggest issues facing today’s youth and serve as a fun metaphor and important lesson in emotional intelligence: ghosting isn’t the answer, and healthy conflict and communication are key to meaningful relationships. we think it worked.
